FAQ
What to know before installing
Is Bandal free? Can I connect an iPad?
Desktop reading and note-taking essentials are free. Bandal Sync is an optional paid subscription for PDFs, notes, and annotations across your devices. The iPad app is in development distribution; confirm access to an installable build before subscribing. See the pricing page for plans and availability.
What does the AI tutor require?
Install and connect Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI. Models and usage depend on your provider account. Codex requires CLI 0.158.0+, and Gemini requires 0.58.0+ with account-dependent restrictions. You can read and take notes without AI.
Where are course files stored?
They remain in the actual folder on your computer that you selected as the course. Drag material in from Finder, paste it, or create folders to organize it.
What is sent when I use the AI tutor?
Your prompts and selected context are processed through your chosen Claude Code, Codex, or Gemini CLI. A Bandal server does not proxy AI requests.
How does AI beside a material tab work?
Open the AI sidebar from a material tab. Ask about the current material or selection, with separate conversations and drafts for each tab. Expand the same conversation into an AI tab when you need more room.
Which installers are available?
Bandal provides macOS dmg files for Apple Silicon and Intel, and a Windows x64 exe, with automatic updates after installation. There is no Linux or Windows arm64 build.
Will Windows show a warning?
The Windows installer is not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show an unknown-publisher warning. The macOS builds are Developer ID signed and Apple-notarized.
Can I transcribe a recording offline?
After downloading a model, speech recognition runs on your device. The default Whisper model is about 1.63 GB and requires macOS 15 or later on Mac. Check important equations and terminology against the original audio.

A simple start
Getting started on Mac
- Download the Apple Silicon or Intel build for your Mac.
- Open the DMG and drag Bandal to Applications.
- Open Bandal and add your study folder as a course.
Getting started on Windows
- Run
Bandal-Setup.exe. - Select More info.
- Choose Run anyway to continue.
SmartScreen may show an unknown-publisher warning.
macOS builds are signed and notarized. The Windows x64 installer is currently unsigned.
